Wednesday: Kitchen Lab: Kitchen Verbs

Lizzy the Lizard holds up four cards: whisk, stir, mash and fold.

"Each verb is a different move," she says. "What do you notice about how they look?"

Bennie stirs slowly. Then he whisks so fast that bubbles fly!

Riley laughs. "Here is a hint," he says. "Watch your spoon, not just the bowl."

Four kitchen verbs

VerbWhat your hand does
WhiskBeat quickly back and forth so things mix and get bubbly.
StirMove the spoon around and around in circles.
MashPress down on soft food again and again.
FoldLift gently from the bottom and turn it over.
  • Two bowls
  • A fork and a big spoon
  • Water with one drop of dish soap
  • Dry oats
  • One ripe banana
  • A container with a lid
  • A towel for spills
Safety first
This lab uses no heat and nothing sharp.
The soapy water is not for drinking. Pour it out when you finish.
Wipe up spills right away.
  1. Wash your hands with all five steps.
  2. Whisk: beat the soapy water with a fork. Watch the bubbles grow.
  3. Stir: move a spoon in circles through a cup of oats.
  4. Fold: lift the oats from the bottom and turn them over gently.
  5. Mash: peel the banana and press it with the fork until smooth.
  6. Put the mashed banana in the container. A grown-up puts it in the freezer.
  7. Pour out the soapy water. Put the oats back.
