Tuesday: Mise en Place

Ferris the Fox hums as he sets bowls, spoons and cups on the counter.

Then he lines up bananas, eggs and oats beside them. Bennie looks puzzled.

"Why put everything out before we start?" Bennie asks. "What do you notice?" Ferris replies.

Riley points to the empty cupboard. "Here is a hint," he says. "No running around later."

Everything in its place

Cooks gather all their ingredients and tools before they start a recipe.

They call it mise en place. Say it "meez on plahs."

It means everything in its place.

A grown-up watches new cooks closely, every time.

  • Read the recipe and make a list.
  • Set out every ingredient.
  • Set out every tool: bowls, cups, spoons and a fork.
  • Check the list. Is anything missing?
