// Design your board game

Tuesday: Design the Board

Rocket draws a long, winding path. He marks one end Start and the other end End.

He adds a few special squares. "How will players know what each square does?" Raven asks.

Nova projects a tiny star. "A small symbol can stand for a big idea," she says. Let's design the board and make a symbol key.

Sketch your board. Mark START and END. Use SYMBOLS for special squares (Week 8: abstraction).

Game board (label START and END)

Symbol legend

Symbol 1: ____ means: ____________________
Symbol 2: ____ means: ____________________
Symbol 3: ____ means: ____________________

Board Symbols and Squares

Special squares use symbols. A symbol is quick to read, so the game moves fast.

Your legend tells players what each symbol means.

READ THE BOARD
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A star square means move ahead 2. You land on a star at square 3. Where do you end?
A snail square means lose a turn. What is that?
Why use a legend?
Which is easiest to read fast?
A board has START, then 9 squares, then END. You roll 4, then 3. Which square are you on?
How many more squares to reach square 9?
An arrow square means go back 1. You land on it at square 6. Where are you now?
StatementTrue or false?
Symbols on a board are abstractions.?
A legend explains the symbols.?
Every square must have a symbol.?
START and END help players know where to go.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEClear symbols and a legend make a game easy to learn.
Try it
Sketch three symbols for your board on scrap paper.
Show them to a grown-up without saying what they mean.
Did they guess? Change any symbol that was confusing.

Quick Check
