Wednesday: The great sort

Raven sets out two towels on the floor.

"One towel for each group," she says.

Rocket wants to sort fast. He tosses things everywhere.

Nova beeps softly. "Hint: test each object before you sort it."

Rocket slows down. "Squeeze first, then sort. What do you notice?"

Your investigation

You will sort the same objects two ways, then compare.

  • two towels or two sheets of paper for groups
  • a sock
  • a metal spoon
  • a sheet of paper
  • a rubber band
  • a plastic cup
  • a wooden block or a pencil
Safety first
Squeeze and bend gently.
Keep rubber bands away from faces.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
  1. Label one towel soft and one towel hard.
  2. Squeeze each object and put it on a towel.
  3. Count each group.
  4. Now relabel the towels flexible and stiff.
  5. Bend each object gently and sort again.
MAKE A PREDICTION
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Will the groups be the same with the new rule?
Which group will the spoon join both times?
RuleGroup oneHow many?Group twoHow many?
soft or hardsofthard
flexible or stiffflexiblestiff
After sortingTrue or false?
The sock was soft and flexible.?
The wooden block was soft.?
Paper was in the flexible group.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEA wooden block is hard. It does not squish.
For a grown-up
A plastic cup may squish a little.
Let your child decide, then explain why.
Good reasons matter more than one answer.
GREAT SORT CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What did you label the towels first?
What did Nova say to do before sorting each object?
The plastic cup squished a little. Where can it go?
What do you do after each sort?
SentenceTrue or false?
We sorted the same objects two ways.?
Rocket sorted best by tossing things fast.?
A rubber band is flexible.?
We bend objects gently.?
WHY THIS EXERCISESlow, careful tests make better groups.
