Family Cook Day: Your Own Snack Plate

Today every friend brings their own card. Hazel pins them up in a row.

"So many different plates!" says Ferris. "What do you notice about every card?"

Lucy the Ladybug reads them. "Every one has a swap line," she says. "That is kind."

Riley smiles. "Here is a hint," he says. "Follow your own card, step by step."

  1. A clear card has a title, makes, ingredients with amounts, an allergy swap and steps.
  2. Every step says who does it: "You:" or "Grown-up:".
  3. Order words: first, next, then, last.
  4. Linking words: also, another, and, more, but.
  5. A grown-up does every cut, even on your own card.
Recipe: My Own Snack Plate
Makes: Copy this from your card.
Ingredients:
Copy each food and its amount from your card.
Use only foods from the snack menu.
Allergy swap: Copy your swap line. It must name an allergen and what to use instead.
  1. You: First, wash your hands with all five steps.
  2. You: Read your whole card out loud to your grown-up.
  3. You: Next, rinse your fruits and vegetables under running water.
  4. Grown-up: Then cut anything your card marks with "Grown-up:".
  5. You: Measure and arrange your foods, one color at a time.
  6. Everyone: Taste your snack plate!
  7. You: Last, wipe the counter. Leftovers go in the fridge within 2 hours.
For a grown-up
A grown-up does every cut today, even if the card forgets to say so.
Check every food and package label against your family's allergies first.
Keep the plate to the snack menu: no heat today.
If a step is unclear, let your child fix the card before you start.
