Monday: What Makes a Clear Card

Hazel the Hedgehog finds an old card in a drawer. It just says "Some fruit. Mix it."

"How much fruit?" asks Bennie the Bear. "Which fruit? Who does what?"

Ferris smiles. "What do you notice is missing from this card?"

Riley tucks a pencil behind Hazel's ear. "Here is a hint," he says. "A good card answers every question."

The parts of a clear card

  • Title: the name of the food.
  • Makes: how many servings.
  • Ingredients: every food, each with an amount.
  • Allergy swap: what to change if someone has a food allergy.
  • Steps: who does each step, in order.

Hazel says a card is clear when someone else can follow it without asking.

Amounts matter. "Some carrots" is fuzzy. "1 cup of baby carrots" is clear.

Every step says who does it: "You:" or "Grown-up:".

FUZZY OR CLEAR?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which ingredient line is clear?
Which step is clear?
Which line belongs on every card?
StatementTrue or false?
Every ingredient needs an amount.?
The steps can skip saying who does them.?
A grown-up does every cutting step.?
A clear card answers questions before anyone asks.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEA clear card lets anyone make the food the same way.
The line that says how many servings is called ____.
"1 cup" is the ____ of an ingredient.
Steps that use a knife start with "____:".
Fix the fuzzy line "some berries." Type the amount you would add, like 1.
WHY THIS EXERCISEAn amount turns a fuzzy line into a clear one.
For a grown-up
This week your child writes a recipe card for a no-heat snack plate.
A grown-up does every cut, even on your child's own card.
Try it
Find a recipe card or a recipe in a book at home.
Point to the title, the amounts and the steps.
Is anything fuzzy? How would you fix it?
On paper, draw an empty recipe card. Label the five parts: title, makes, ingredients, allergy swap, steps.

Great reading, writer! Tomorrow Hazel shows you order words and linking words.
