Family Cook Day: Family Veggie Soup

The trail crew crowds into the cabin kitchen. Everyone is hungry!

Ferris sets out a big pot. "What do you notice? Today the recipe grows."

Lucy the Ladybug lines up the bowls. "One for each friend," she says.

Riley shakes the herbs. "Here is a hint," he says. "Scale every amount, not just one."

  1. To scale up, multiply every amount by the same number.
  2. To make a half batch, multiply every amount by 1/2.
  3. To multiply fractions, multiply the tops, then the bottoms.
  4. 1 tablespoon is 3 teaspoons. 1 cup is 8 fluid ounces, or 16 tablespoons.
  5. 2 cups make 1 pint.

For a grown-up
A grown-up handles the stove, the knife, the can opener and the hot pot.
Keep your child back from the stove while the soup boils.
Water boils at 100 degrees C at sea level.
Heat leftovers to 165 degrees F before eating them again.
β—‡ CROWD COUNT
Count how many people will eat soup today.
Work out how many batches of 4 bowls you need.
Scale two ingredients together, like the broth and the pasta.
Check each other's math before you measure.
