Ferris the Fox reads a letter. "The whole trail crew is coming for soup!" he says.
Bennie the Bear looks at the soup card. "But it only makes 4 bowls."
"What do you notice if we want 8 bowls?" Ferris asks. "How many times bigger is that?"
Riley the Raccoon holds up two spoons. "Here is a hint," he says. "Every amount must grow."
To scale a recipe up, multiply every amount by the same number.
To make 2 times as much, multiply by 2. That is doubling.
To make 3 times as much, multiply by 3. That is tripling.
If you skip one ingredient, the food will not taste the same.
3 times 1/2 cup means three scoops of 1/2 cup.
That is 3/2 cups. Two halves make one whole, so 3/2 is 1 1/2 cups.
2 times 3/4 cup is 6/4 cups. That is 1 2/4, or 1 1/2 cups.
| Amount for 4 bowls | Times 2 (8 bowls) | Times 3 (12 bowls) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 cup of pasta | 1 cup | 1 1/2 cups |
| 1/4 teaspoon of salt | 1/2 teaspoon | 3/4 teaspoon |

Great scaling, cook! Tomorrow Bennie shows you how to make a smaller batch.
