Wednesday: Kitchen Lab: The Color Hunt

Lizzy the Lizard holds a clipboard. "Today we hunt for colors in the kitchen!" she says.

"What do you notice when you peek in the fridge?" Ferris asks.

Bennie spots carrots, peppers and a bunch of grapes. "So many colors!" he says.

Riley taps the clipboard. "Here is a hint," he says. "Tally first, then graph."

Your mission

Count every fruit and vegetable you can find in your kitchen.

Make a tally for each color.

Then turn your tallies into a bar graph.

  • A pencil and paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Your kitchen fridge, counter and fruit bowl
  • A grown-up helper
Safety first
This lab uses no heat and nothing sharp.
Look and count. Leave the food where you find it.
Close the fridge door quickly to keep the food cold.
  1. Copy the tally table below on paper.
  2. Look in the fruit bowl, on the counter and in the fridge.
  3. Make one tally mark for each fruit or vegetable you find.
  4. Count each row and write the number.
  5. On grid paper or lined paper, draw one bar for each color.
  6. Let each square stand for 1 food. Color each bar to match.

MAKE A PREDICTION
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
You find 6 green foods and 2 red foods. Which bar will be taller?
On paper, draw your bar graph. Give it a title and label each bar with a color.

Look at your results

Which bar is the tallest? Which is the shortest?

Is any color missing? That could be a color to add next time.

Bennie found 6 green foods and 2 yellow foods. How many more green?
Lizzy found 3 red foods and 4 orange foods. How many in all?
What we learnedTrue or false?
The tallest bar shows the color with the most foods.?
A bar graph and a tally chart can show the same counts.?
Every kitchen has the same colors.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEGraphs make it easy to compare at a glance.
For a grown-up
No heat and no knives today. Your child only looks and counts.
On Saturday, a grown-up handles every knife job.
If a color is missing, you might add it to your next grocery list.

Great hunting, scientist! Tomorrow you read the Rainbow Veggie Wraps card.
