Thursday: The Half-Batch Card

Hazel the Hedgehog copies Ferris's big recipe onto a new card, in half.

"I split every amount by 2," she says, tapping her pencil.

Bennie checks her work. "What do you notice about the flour and the eggs?"

Riley points at the sugar line. "Here is a hint," he says. "Two thirds is tricky."

Big batch and half-batch

IngredientBig batch (2 loaves)Half-batch (1 loaf)
Ripe bananas42
Eggs21
Cooking oil1/2 cup1/4 cup
Sugar2/3 cup1/3 cup
Flour2 cups1 cup
Baking soda1 teaspoon1/2 teaspoon
Salt1/2 teaspoon1/4 teaspoon
Cinnamon1 teaspoon1/2 teaspoon

Why is half of 2/3 cup equal to 1/3 cup?

Because 1/3 plus 1/3 is 2/3. So 2/3 splits into two 1/3 parts.

Safety first
A grown-up handles the oven, the hot pan and the knife.
Never taste raw batter made with flour or egg.

Recipe math: times a whole number

Lucy wants 3 small loaves for the trail party. Each loaf uses 1/4 cup of oil.

3 times 1/4 is 1/4 plus 1/4 plus 1/4. That is 3/4 cup of oil.

3 loaves each use 1/3 cup of sugar. How many thirds of a cup in all?
2 loaves each use 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. How many teaspoons in all?
4 loaves each use 1/4 teaspoon of salt. How many teaspoons in all?
