Family Cook Day: Half-Batch Banana Bread
// Halve it, double it, add it up

Family Cook Day: Half-Batch Banana Bread

The cabin smells of cinnamon. Hazel props her half-batch card against the flour jar.

"Every amount is half," she says. "What do you notice about the sugar line?"

Lucy the Ladybug counts out two ripe bananas. "Half of four is two!"

Riley hands Bennie a fork. "Here is a hint," he says. "Mash first, measure next."

  1. To halve a recipe, split every amount into 2 equal parts.
  2. To double, add each amount to itself.
  3. Same bottom number? Add the top numbers.
  4. 3 times 1/4 is 3/4.
  5. Never taste raw batter made with flour or egg.
Recipe: Half-Batch Banana Bread
Makes: 1 small loaf.
Ingredients:
2 ripe bananas
1 egg
1/4 cup of cooking oil
1/3 cup of sugar
1 cup of flour
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
Allergy swap: Egg or wheat allergy? This bread needs both, so make the Week 1 Rainbow Fruit Cups instead.
  1. You: Wash your hands with all five steps.
  2. Grown-up: Heat the oven to 350 degrees F and oil a small loaf pan.
  3. You: Mash the bananas in a big bowl with a fork.
  4. You: Crack in the egg. Wash your hands, because you touched raw egg.
  5. You: Add the oil and sugar. Whisk them together.
  6. You: Measure the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Level each one.
  7. You: Fold the dry ingredients in gently.
  8. You: Wash your hands again, because you touched raw flour.
  9. Grown-up: Pour the batter into the pan and bake it in the oven.
  10. Grown-up: Bake until a toothpick in the middle comes out clean.
  11. Grown-up: Take it out with oven mitts. Let it cool, then slice it.
  12. Everyone: Taste your banana bread!
  13. You: Wash the bowl and wipe the counter.
For a grown-up
A grown-up handles the oven, the hot pan and the knife.
Your child does not taste the raw batter, which has raw flour and egg.
Wrap leftovers and put them away within 2 hours.
β—‡ DOUBLE IT
One person reads an amount from the half-batch card.
The other says the big-batch amount by doubling it.
Example: "1/3 cup of sugar." "Double is 2/3 cup!"
Switch roles until every line is doubled.
