Bennie the Bear holds up a cracker box. "There are so many tiny words!" he says.
Lizzy points near the bottom. "What do you notice about this line? It says Contains."
Bennie reads it slowly. "Contains wheat, milk and soy."
Riley grins. "Here is a hint," he says. "That one line names the allergens."
Food labels must name the major allergens.
They are named in the ingredients list, or in a Contains line.
A Contains line might say: Contains wheat, milk, and soy.
| Pretend label | Contains line |
|---|---|
| Crackers | Contains: wheat, sesame. |
| Snack bar | Contains: peanuts, soy. |
| Pancake mix | Contains: wheat, milk, eggs. |
| Rice cakes | No Contains line |
Recipes use parts of a cup. A number line can show them.
Draw a line from 0 to 1 cup. Split it into 4 equal parts.
The marks are 0, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 1.
