Family Cook Day: Trail Snack Mix

The crew packs for a walk on the trail. "We need a snack!" says Bennie.

Ferris sets out the measuring cups. "What do you notice? Every food has its own amount."

Lucy the Ladybug holds up four bags. "One for each of us," she says.

Riley shakes the cinnamon. "Here is a hint," he says. "Level off, then share fairly."

  1. Dry food goes in dry cups. Liquids go in a liquid cup.
  2. Level off dry food with a straight edge.
  3. Read a liquid cup on a flat counter, at eye level.
  4. Two 1/4 cups make 1/2 cup. Four 1/4 cups make 1 cup.
  5. One tablespoon is exactly 3 teaspoons.
Recipe: Trail Snack Mix
Makes: 4 snack bags.
Ingredients:
1 cup of oat cereal rings
1/2 cup of small pretzels
1/2 cup of raisins
1/4 cup of dried cranberries
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
Allergy swap: Wheat allergy? Use more oat cereal instead of pretzels. Check every package label first.
  1. You: Wash your hands with all five steps.
  2. You: Measure 1 cup of cereal. Level it off and pour it in the bowl.
  3. You: Measure 1/2 cup of pretzels and 1/2 cup of raisins. Level each one.
  4. You: Measure 1/4 cup of cranberries and pour them in.
  5. You: Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of cinnamon on top. Stir gently.
  6. You: Share the mix into 4 bags, one scoop at a time.
  7. Everyone: Taste a handful of your mix!
  8. You: Wash the cups and wipe the counter.
For a grown-up
This recipe needs nothing hot and nothing sharp.
Read every package label with your child before you start.
Look for your family's allergens and for "may contain" lines.
Help your child level off each cup, then let them pour.
◇ MEASURE MATCH
One person names an amount, like 1/2 cup.
The other finds a way to measure it with different cups.
Example: 1/2 cup is two scoops of the 1/4 cup.
Switch roles. Try 1 cup, 3/4 cup and 1 tablespoon.
