Tuesday: Five Steps to Clean Hands

Bennie rinses his paws for one quick second. "Done!" he says, reaching for a bowl.

Lizzy the Lizard looks up from her notebook. "What do you notice? Was there any soap?"

Bennie looks at his paws. They are wet, but not very clean.

Riley holds up the soap. "Here is a hint," he says. "Count while you scrub."

When to wash

Cooks wash their hands before, during and after making food.

They also wash before they eat.

If you touch raw eggs or flour, wash your hands again right after.

How to wash: five steps

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water. Warm or cold is fine.
  2. Turn off the tap and put on soap.
  3. Lather: rub soap on the backs of your hands. Get between fingers and under nails.
  4. Scrub for at least 20 seconds. Hum the birthday song twice to time it.
  5. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  6. Dry your hands with a clean towel.
