Thursday: Read the Recipe Card

Oliver the Owl pins a card to the wall. "This is our first recipe," he says.

Bennie squints at it. "So many words! Where do I start?"

Ferris points to the top. "What do you notice about how the card is set up?"

Riley taps the card. "Here is a hint," he says. "Read every part before you begin."

The parts of a recipe card

  • Title: the name of the food.
  • Makes: how many servings the recipe gives.
  • Ingredients: the foods you need and how much of each.
  • Allergy swap: a change so someone with a food allergy can eat it.
  • Steps: what to do, in order.
Recipe: Rainbow Fruit Cups
Makes: 4 cups, one for each person.
Ingredients:
1 cup of strawberries
1 cup of orange pieces
1 banana
1 cup of green grapes
1 cup of blueberries
Allergy swap: Fruit allergies happen too. Leave out any fruit your family avoids, and add more of another.
  1. You: Wash your hands with all five steps.
  2. You: Rinse the strawberries, grapes and blueberries under running water.
  3. Grown-up: Cut the strawberries, banana and grapes into small pieces with a knife.
  4. You: Put one color at a time into each cup, red first.
  5. You: Count to check that every cup got the same.
  6. Everyone: Taste, smile and clean up together.
Safety first
A grown-up handles the knife and does all the cutting.
Keep your fingers away from the cutting board while the grown-up works.
FIND IT ON THE CARD
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many cups does the recipe make?
Which part tells you how much of each fruit?
Who cuts the fruit?

Recipe math: equal groups

Each cup should get the same amount. That is called equal groups.

If each cup gets 5 blueberries, and there are 4 cups, multiply.

4 groups of 5 is 20. You need 20 blueberries.

Each cup gets 3 strawberry pieces. There are 4 cups. How many pieces in all?
Each cup gets 6 grape halves. There are 4 cups. How many halves in all?
20 blueberries are shared by 4 cups. How many in each cup?
PUT THE FRUIT CUP STEPS IN ORDER
