Friday

Every drop counts
// Salty, fresh and frozen
⏱ about 15 min

Friday: Every drop counts

Rocket brushes his teeth with the faucet running full blast. Raven taps on the bathroom door.

"Remember the one bean?" she calls.

Rocket looks at the water rushing down the drain. Then he turns the faucet off while he brushes.

Nova hovers in the doorway. "Great discovery," she says. "Data can change what we do."

Rocket grins with a foamy mouth. "Every drop counts," he says.

Why fresh water matters

Earth has a lot of water, but only a small part is fresh.

Most of that fresh water is frozen in ice or hidden underground.

The water in lakes and rivers is only a tiny part of all fresh water. That is why people work to keep it clean and not waste it.

StatementTrue or false?
About 2.5 percent of Earth's water is fresh.?
Most fresh water is in lakes and rivers.?
Groundwater is fresh water stored underground.?
About 71 percent of Earth's surface is covered by water.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThese numbers explain why fresh water, especially surface water, is precious.
A place where water is stored is called a ____.
A huge, slow-moving mass of ice on land is a ____.
USE THE DATA
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Why is it important not to waste water from the tap?

Using data to act

Data shows that only a small part of Earth's water is fresh and easy to reach.

That is why people work to keep lakes and rivers clean.

Small habits, like turning off the tap, help save fresh water.

WATER HABITS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which habit saves water?
What made Rocket change his habit?
Only about ____ percent of Earth's water is fresh.
Over 68 percent of fresh water is frozen in ice and ____.
FROM BIG TO SMALL
  • ?All of Earth's water
  • ?Fresh water in lakes, rivers and swamps
  • ?Fresh water
WHY THIS EXERCISESurface fresh water is a tiny part of a small part.
Try it
With your family, list three ways you use water every day.
For each one, think of one way to use a little less.
Make a poster about saving fresh water. Include the one bean out of 40 and one water saving habit.

You used real data to make a smart choice. Tomorrow is Launch Lab with your family.
