At lunch, Rocket stares at his plate: rice, scrambled egg and orange slices.
"I can see the Sun in the rice and the orange," he says. "They are plants. But the egg?"
Raven thinks. "What do you notice about where eggs come from?"
"Hens," Rocket says. "And hens eat grain. And grain is a plant." He grins. "Still sunshine!"
Nova does a happy loop. "Great discovery," she says.
Some foods come straight from plants, like rice, oranges and beans. Their energy came from sunlight the plants captured.
Other foods come from animals, like eggs. Those animals ate plants, or ate animals that ate plants.
Either way, the energy traces back to the Sun.
| Food | Path back to the Sun |
|---|---|
| Rice | Rice plant, then the Sun |
| Orange | Orange tree, then the Sun |
| Egg | Hen, then grain plants, then the Sun |
| Food | Can its energy be traced back to the Sun? |

Some foods have a short path back to the Sun.
An orange goes straight from the tree to you.
Foods from animals have a longer path, because the animal ate first.

You can now find the Sun in any meal. Tomorrow is Launch Lab with your family.
