Launch Lab: Fizz race

The family gathers around a tray on the kitchen table. Everyone has goggles on, even Rocket's little cousin.

"Today we race fizzes," Raven says. "One spoon of baking soda, three different amounts of vinegar."

Rocket rubs his hands together. "My guess is that more vinegar makes more foam," he says.

Nova floats over the cups like a referee. "A guess is a great start," she says. "Now let's collect the evidence."

  1. A chemical reaction makes a new substance with different properties.
  2. Evidence of a reaction: gas, color change, temperature change or a precipitate.
  3. Baking soda and vinegar react to make carbon dioxide gas.
  4. Baking powder is a mixture. Water starts a reaction inside it.
β—‡ FIZZ RACE
Everyone puts on goggles first.
Put half a teaspoon of baking soda into each of three cups on a tray.
The grown-up adds 1 teaspoon of vinegar to cup one.
Next, 2 teaspoons go into cup two and 3 teaspoons into cup three.
Watch how high the foam rises in each cup.
Talk about the pattern you see.
For a grown-up
Ask: what did you notice? What would you change?
You pour the vinegar. Keep goggles on until the cups are rinsed and hands are washed.
WEEK CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What makes the foam when baking soda and vinegar mix?
Which is evidence of a chemical reaction?
A solid that forms when two liquids mix is a ____.
Baking powder is a ____ of three ingredients.
Does salt dissolving in water make a new substance? Type yes or no.
WHY THIS EXERCISEDissolving makes a mixture. The salt is still salt.

You finished the matter unit. Next week we explore a force that pulls on every object around you.
