Launch Lab: Family safety map

Rocket unrolls a big sheet of paper on the kitchen floor. "Final mission! We map our home."

Raven hands out markers. "Draw every room. Then we mark the safest spots. What do you notice about each room?"

Rocket sketches the living room. "The big table is sturdy. That is a cover spot!"

Nova floats above the map, glowing gold. "My hint," she says. "A good map helps everyone remember the plan."

When the map is done, the whole family practices Drop, Cover, Hold On. Then they cheer for twelve weeks of science!

  1. About 71 percent of Earth's surface is covered by water.
  2. Topographic maps use contour lines to show the shape of the land.
  3. Most earthquakes and volcanoes form bands, like the Ring of Fire around the Pacific.
  4. The longest mountain range on Earth is the mid-ocean ridge, mostly underwater.
  5. People cannot stop natural hazards, but they can design ways to reduce harm.
  6. Drop, Cover, Hold On during an earthquake.
β—‡ FAMILY SAFETY MAP
Draw a map of your home together. Include every room and door.
Mark a sturdy table or an inside wall away from windows in each room.
Mark a meeting place outside where everyone gathers after an emergency.
Practice Drop, Cover, Hold On together one time.
For a grown-up
Ask: What did you notice? What would you change?
Ask your child to explain one way people reduce the harm from a natural hazard.
Celebrate twelve weeks of science learning together!
FINAL LAUNCH LAB CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
During an earthquake, what is the first step?
Where do most of Earth's volcanoes and big earthquakes happen?
The band of volcanoes around the Pacific is the Ring of ____.
The deepest part of the ocean is the Challenger ____.
During an earthquake, what are the three steps?
WHY THIS EXERCISEDrop, Cover, Hold On helps keep you safe.

You finished all twelve weeks of Science Launch! Rocket, Raven and Nova are so proud of your curiosity and hard work.
