Launch Lab: Energy hunt

Rocket hands out clipboards at the front door. "Energy hunt! We have ten minutes to find energy on the move."

Raven draws four columns on her paper: sound, light, heat and electric current.

"Look and listen," she says. "What do you notice moving energy from one place to another?"

Nova floats down the hallway like a little lantern. "My hint," she says. "Some things move energy in two ways at once."

  1. Energy can travel from place to place.
  2. Sound comes from vibrations and carries energy through the air.
  3. Light carries energy and can warm what it lands on.
  4. Heat moves from warmer things to cooler things.
  5. Electric currents need a complete circuit to flow.
β—‡ ENERGY HUNT
Walk through your home together with a sheet of paper.
Make four columns: sound, light, heat and electric current.
Write each thing you find in the right column.
Circle anything that fits in two columns.
Safety first
Look, but do not touch the stove, outlets or plugged in cords.
For a grown-up
Ask: What did you notice? What would you change?
Ask your child to explain one item that moves energy in two ways.
A lamp is a good example: it makes light and some heat.
A ringing phone moves energy as ____.
A ceiling light gets energy through wires as an electric ____.
Sunlight through a window moves energy as ____.
ENERGY ON THE MOVE REVIEW
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A toaster glows and gets hot. Which two ways does it move energy?
You count 10 seconds between flash and thunder. How far away is the lightning?

Week 3 complete! Next week you become an engineer and design your own energy converter.
