Launch Lab: Family Weather Safety Plan

Rocket unrolls a big sheet of paper. "Let's draw our home and plan for storms!" he says.

Raven grabs crayons. "What do you notice about our rooms? Which one has no windows?"

Nova hovers over the map. "Mark the safest spot with a star," she says. "Then practice getting there."

Rocket draws a giant star.

  1. Lightning, floods and tornadoes are weather hazards.
  2. When thunder roars, go indoors. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder.
  3. Lightning rods give lightning a safe path to the ground.
  4. Levees and floodwalls help hold back flood water. Turn around, don't drown.
  5. In a tornado warning, go to a basement, safe room or inside room.
  6. Stay away from windows.
  7. Good claims use evidence and reasoning.
β—‡ FAMILY WEATHER SAFETY PLAN
Draw a simple map of your home.
Find an inside room with no windows, or the fewest. Mark it with a star.
Write where your family will meet during a thunderstorm.
Practice walking calmly to the star spot.
Time your practice. Can you get there in under one minute?
Hang your plan where everyone can see it.
Safety first
Walk, do not run, during your practice.
Practice only on a calm day, not during a real storm.
For a grown-up
Ask: what did you notice? What would you change?
Ask: what would we do if we were away from home when a storm came?
