Wednesday: Melting glacier

A grown-up pops a big block of ice out of a tub.

"Here is our glacier," she says.

Rocket props up one end of the tray with a book.

Nova hovers. "Hint: where will the melt water go?"

"What do you notice?" Raven asks as the first drops slide.

Your investigation

You will model a glacier melting into a river and a lake.

  • a block of ice frozen in a small plastic tub
  • a baking tray
  • a thick book
  • a bowl to be the lake
  • a towel
Safety first
A grown-up freezes the ice and takes it out of the tub.
Do not eat or lick the ice.
Wipe drips so nobody slips.
  1. Put the tray on a towel.
  2. Prop up one end of the tray with the book.
  3. Put the bowl at the low end.
  4. Set the ice block at the high end.
  5. Watch for 30 minutes. Check every 10 minutes.
