Wednesday: Save the hill

Rocket builds three small soil hills in pans.

"One stays bare," he says. "Two get a design to protect them."

Raven covers one hill with leaves. Rocket builds a stick wall around another.

Nova checks the cups. "Hint: use the same water on every hill."

"What will we notice?" Raven wonders.

Your investigation

You will compare two designs that protect soil from water.

  • three baking pans or plastic trays
  • soil or sand
  • leaves or grass clippings
  • craft sticks or small twigs
  • three cups of water, all the same size
Safety first
Do this outside or on a big towel.
Wash your hands after touching soil.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
  1. Make a small, damp soil hill at one end of each pan.
  2. Leave hill one bare.
  3. Cover hill two with leaves or grass.
  4. Push sticks into the soil around hill three, like a wall.
  5. Pour one cup of water slowly on top of each hill.
  6. Look at how much soil moved in each pan.
MAKE A PREDICTION

After testingTrue or false?
We compared two designs and a bare hill.?
Each hill got a different amount of water.?
WHY THIS EXERCISESame water means we can compare the designs.
For a grown-up
Help your child pour slowly and evenly.
Ask what each design did well and not so well.
HILL TEST CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many hills did you build?
What covered hill two?
What is a design?
How should you pour the water?
SentenceTrue or false?
