Launch Lab: Wind fence test

Rocket tears paper into tiny bits. "This is our pretend sand!"

Raven folds an index card into a little fence.

They take turns blowing gently through a straw.

"What do you notice behind the fence?" Raven asks.

Nova cheers. "Hint: count the bits that stayed!"

  1. Wind and water can carry soil and sand away.
  2. Roots hold soil. Dune grass holds sand.
  3. Sand fences and windbreaks slow the wind.
  4. Engineers compare designs to find strengths and weaknesses.
โ—‡ FAMILY WIND FENCE TEST
Tear paper into ten tiny bits.
Put them on a tray and blow gently through a straw.
Count how many blow off.
Put the bits back. Stand a folded card in front as a fence.
Blow the same way again and count.
Safety first
Blow gently. Point the straw away from faces.
Each person uses their own straw.
For a grown-up
Ask: what did you notice?
What would you change?
Try a taller fence or a fence with holes.
WEEK CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What did the paper fence stand for?
What holds soil in place on a hill?
FENCE TEST CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What did Rocket use as pretend sand?
What did Raven fold into a fence?
Where should the straw point?
Draw your paper fence and the bits behind it.

Great engineering, crew! See you next week.
