Wednesday: Habitat hunt

Raven lays a loop of string on the grass.

"This circle is our tiny habitat," she says.

Rocket lays a second loop under a shady bush.

"Let us compare!" he says. "What do you notice in each one?"

Nova dims her light. "Hint: look slowly. Small things hide."

Your investigation

You will compare the living things in two small spots.

  • two pieces of string or yarn, each as long as your arm
  • a sunny spot with grass
  • a shady or damp spot, like under a bush
  • a magnifying glass if you have one
Safety first
A grown-up comes with you.
Look, but do not touch animals or bugs.
Do not touch plants you do not know.
Wash your hands when you finish.
  1. Make a circle with string in a sunny spot.
  2. Count the kinds of plants you see inside.
  3. Count the kinds of animals, like ants or worms.
  4. Make a second circle in a shady spot.
  5. Count again.
