Launch Lab: Freeze it, melt it

Rocket wants to prove ice can change and change back.

He pours water into a cup and marks the top.

"See you tomorrow, water!" he says.

Raven smiles. "What will you notice when it freezes?"

Nova winks. "Hint: watch your line."

  1. Warming can melt ice into water.
  2. Cooling can freeze water into ice.
  3. Melting and freezing can be undone.
  4. Cooking an egg or burning paper cannot be undone.
β—‡ FAMILY FREEZE AND MELT
Pour water into a small plastic cup.
Draw a line on the cup at the water top.
A grown-up puts the cup in the freezer overnight.
Look at the ice the next day. Where is the top now?
Leave it out to melt. Is it water again?
Safety first
Use a plastic cup, not glass.
A grown-up handles the freezer.
Do not eat the ice.
For a grown-up
Ask: what did you notice?
What would you change?
Ice may rise above the line. Water takes more room as ice.

Draw your cup before and after freezing. Show the line.

Cool science, crew! See you next week.
