Thursday: Tiny pieces in nature

The crew builds a sandcastle at the park.

Rocket scoops a handful of sand. It trickles through his fingers.

Raven looks very closely. "What do you notice about sand?"

Nova shines her light on it. "Hint: look at one tiny piece."

"It is made of tiny grains!" Rocket says.

Sand is made of grains

Sand is made of tiny grains.

Each grain is a tiny bit of mineral or rock.

Most sand on Earth is a mineral called quartz.

A sandcastle is built from many, many grains.

When it falls, the grains are still there.
