Wednesday: Property detectives

Rocket lines up six things on the table.

"Let us test every one!" he says.

Raven opens her notebook. "What do you notice first?"

Nova shines a light on a sock. "Hint: test one property at a time."

Rocket grins. "Squeeze, bend, rub. Then we write it down."

Your investigation

You will test six objects for hardness, flexibility and texture.

  • a metal spoon
  • a sock
  • a sheet of paper
  • a rubber band
  • a wooden block or a pencil
  • a plastic cup
Safety first
Use only the objects on this list.
Bend things gently. Stop if something might snap.
Do not stretch the rubber band near your face.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
  1. Squeeze each object gently. Is it hard or soft?
  2. Try to bend it a little. Is it flexible or stiff?
  3. Rub it with a finger. Is it rough or smooth?
  4. Say your three words out loud.
MAKE A PREDICTION
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which object do you predict will bend?
Which object do you predict will feel soft?
ObjectHard or soft?Flexible or stiff?Rough or smooth?
metal spoon
sock
paper
rubber band
wooden block
plastic cup
After testingTrue or false?
The metal spoon is stiff.?
The sock is hard.?
Paper can bend.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEA sock squishes, so it is soft, not hard.
For a grown-up
Help your child bend things gently.
Answers can differ a little, and that is fine.
Ask them to explain how they tested.
DETECTIVE CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many properties did you test on each object?
What should you do if something might snap?
Which object felt smooth and hard?
Nova said to test how many properties at a time?
SentenceTrue or false?
A rubber band is flexible.?
The plastic cup went in your mouth.?
Scientists write down what they notice.?
Answers can differ a little between testers.?
WHY THIS EXERCISECareful testing and notes help scientists compare.
