Launch Lab: Property hunt

It is Saturday, and the crew is home.

Rocket holds up a list. "Find something rough, smooth, soft and flexible!"

Raven checks the kitchen. "What do you notice in here?"

Nova zips to a towel. "Hint: try the soft things first."

  1. An object is a thing. A material is what it is made of.
  2. Properties include color, texture, hardness and flexibility.
  3. Wood comes from trees, and glass is made mostly from sand.
◇ FAMILY PROPERTY HUNT
Walk through your home together.
Find one thing that is rough.
Find one thing that is smooth.
Find one thing that is soft.
Find one thing that is flexible.
Name the material of each one.
Safety first
Stay away from anything sharp or hot.
Leave glass things where they are.
Ask a grown-up before you touch anything.

Ask: what did you notice?
What would you change?
Ask your child to name a material for each find.
