Rocket wonders, "How does water get up to the leaves?"

Raven holds a celery stalk.

Nova says, "Add color to the water and watch."

You need

  • A celery stalk with leaves
  • A clear cup of water
  • Blue or red food coloring
  • A grown-up with a knife
Safety first
A grown-up cuts the celery.
This celery is for science, not for eating.
Food coloring can stain, so cover the table.

Steps

  1. Fill the cup halfway with water.
  2. Add many drops of food coloring.
  3. A grown-up cuts the bottom off the celery.
  4. Stand the celery in the colored water.
  5. Look again after a few hours.
  6. Look one more time tomorrow.
