Investigation: Jumping rice

Wednesday: Jumping rice

Rocket wants to see sound. "Can we watch it shake things?"

Raven grabs a bowl and some dry rice.

Nova hums. "Try a drum you can see," she says.

You need

  • A bowl
  • Plastic wrap
  • A small pinch of dry rice
  • A metal pot or baking pan
  • A wooden spoon
Safety first
Rice is for looking at only.
Keep rice out of mouths, noses and ears.
A grown-up bangs the pot.
Cover your ears if a sound is too loud.

Steps

  1. A grown-up stretches plastic wrap tight over the bowl.
  2. Sprinkle a few grains of rice on the wrap.
  3. A grown-up holds the pot near the bowl.
  4. The pot must not touch the bowl.
  5. A grown-up bangs the pot once with the spoon.
  6. Watch the rice very closely.
  7. Try a soft tap. Then try a bigger bang.
