Thursday: Find the Hidden Pattern

Rocket strings beads on a necklace. Red, blue, red, blue. Then he adds a green bead by mistake. "Oops! That one breaks the pattern," he says.

Raven smiles. "Mistakes help us look closer. What would the hundredth bead be?"

Nova blinks. "Would you like a hint? Look at which beads land on even numbers." Let's find the hidden patterns.

Each row has ONE item that BREAKS the pattern. Circle it.

Row 1: β–² ● β–² ● β–² β–² β–² ●
Row 2: 2 4 6 8 10 11 14 16
Row 3: Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sun Sat
Row 4: red blue red blue red green red blue

Predict the 100th item

Pattern: A B A B A B A B... What is item #100? Item #99?

#100 = ____
#99 = ____
How did you figure it out?

Predict Far Ahead

You do not need to count to 100 to find item 100. Use the length of one lap.

In a two item lap, even items get the second item. Odd items get the first.

JUMP AHEAD
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A, B, A, B, ... What is item 50?
A, B, A, B, ... What is item 21?
red, blue, green, red, blue, green, ... What is item 6?
Same pattern. What is item 7?
clap, snap, clap, snap, ... What is item 10?
sun, moon, star, sun, moon, star, ... What is item 9?
Which number breaks the pattern: 2, 4, 6, 9, 10?
StatementTrue or false?
In A, B, A, B, every even item is B.?
You must count every item to find item 100.?
A three item lap starts over every 3 items.?
In 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, item 6 is 3.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEPredicting far ahead is what makes patterns so useful.
circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle, ... What is item 12?
WHY THIS EXERCISEWhen the item number fits the lap length, you land on the last item.
Try it
Line up shoes in a pattern: left, right, left, right.
Ask a grown-up to guess shoe 15 without counting.
Check together by counting.

Pattern Loops

Every pattern can become a LOOP. Pair the pattern with its loop:

PatternLoop
clap clap snap, clap clap snap, ...( ) REPEAT (X) 5 times
X X X X X( ) REPEAT (clap clap snap) forever
red blue red blue red blue( ) REPEAT (red blue) until done
