Crew Quest

// What's repeating?

Crew Quest: Pattern Composer

Rocket claps a pattern that is four beats long. Raven claps one that is six beats long. They clap at the same time.

At first it sounds jumbled. Then, sometimes, their claps start together again!

"When do our patterns meet?" Raven asks. Nova bobs up and down. "Try counting the beats out loud," she hints. Let's make some clap patterns.

Make a 4-beat clap pattern of your own. Write it. Then make a 6-beat. Then an 8-beat.

Use X for clap, . for pause, S for snap.

4-beat: ____ ____ ____ ____
6-beat: ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____
8-beat: ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____

Layer them

Have one person clap the 4-beat. Another claps the 6-beat.

When do they line up? That's a PATTERN MEET (in math it is called the least common multiple).

First time both lines up at beat number:

β˜… Earn a star for a pattern that PROUD GRANDPARENTS can repeat back.

Week 10 Recap

  1. PATTERN = something that repeats predictably.
  2. Spot the rule, predict the next item.
  3. Every pattern can become a LOOP.
Try This Without Paper
1. Tap a 4-beat rhythm. Get a parent to predict beat 5.
2. Spot a number pattern on a license plate (1-3-5? 2-4-6?).
3. Sing the chorus of a song; that's a pattern repeat.
β—‡ ECHO PATTERN GAME
One person claps a 4 beat pattern, like clap, clap, snap, pause.
The next person echoes it, then adds one beat.
Keep going around. How long can the pattern grow?
Write the longest pattern with X for clap and S for snap.
WEEK 10 REVIEW
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What is a pattern?
X X S, X X S, ... How many S beats in 4 laps?
Every pattern can be written as a what?
2, 4, 6, 8: what is the rule?
StatementTrue or false?

WHY THIS EXERCISEPatterns let us predict, and loops let us repeat them.
