// Big idea, small details

Tuesday: Map It

Rocket wants to draw a map to school. He starts drawing every leaf on every tree. "This will take all week!" he says.

Raven looks at the map. "What do you notice? We need streets and buildings to find our way."

Nova shows a simple map hologram. "A map keeps the big things. It leaves the small things out." Let's help them draw a map with only the big things.

A map is an ABSTRACTION of a place. It hides bricks, leaves, dust, and shows STREETS, BUILDINGS, PARKS.

Make a map of your route to school

Draw your route (only the BIG things)

Now write three details you LEFT OUT on purpose. (Those are the ones the map abstracts away.)

What to Keep, What to Hide

A good map keeps what you need for the trip. It hides what you do not need.

PICK WHAT THE MAP NEEDS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A map for walking to the library should show what?
A zoo map should show what?
A bus map shows each stop as a dot. What do the dots hide?
Which detail could a playground map leave out?
On a map, a blue line often stands for a ____.
A small tree symbol might stand for a ____.
The part of a map that explains the symbols is the ____.
StatementTrue or false?
A map is smaller than the place it shows.?
A good map shows everything in the real place.?
Different trips may need different maps.?
A map key explains what the symbols mean.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEChoosing what to keep is the hard part of abstraction.
Try it
Sketch a map of one room in your home.
Show only three big things.
Add a key that explains your symbols.

Quick Check

A map hides small details. Which would a town map leave out: a street, a school, or a puddle? ____
WHY THIS EXERCISEAbstraction keeps only what you need. Programmers leave out details that do not help solve the problem.
