Monday: Meet the Idea

Rocket hops into the kitchen with one shoe on. "I put my shoe on first," he says. "Now my sock will not fit!"

"That is okay," Raven says. "What do you notice about the order?"

Nova blinks her blue eyes. "Every step has its own place in line," she says.

Now Rocket wants to plan his whole morning. Let's help him put the steps in order.

Meet the Code Crew! ROCKET is the inventor. RAVEN is the explorer. NOVA is our AI companion drone. She runs the programs we write, one step at a time.

ROCKET put on socks BEFORE shoes. Easy. Then he tried shoes first, then socks. Stuck!

Computers are like that: they do the steps in the order you give them. If the order is wrong, they get stuck.

Big Idea
A SEQUENCE is a list of steps in order.
Same steps, different order = different result.

Why Order Matters

Nova runs steps from top to bottom. She never skips ahead, and she never guesses.

Read the two programs below. They use the same two steps in a different order.

PROGRAM A
  1. open the door
  2. walk outside

PROGRAM B
  1. walk outside
  2. open the door
SAME STEPS, NEW ORDER
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which program gets Nova outside?
In Program B, what goes wrong first?
Both programs have the same steps. What is different?
Rocket put shoes on before socks. What kind of mistake is that?
Steps: wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast. Which step is FIRST?
Same steps. Which step is LAST?
How many steps are in this sequence?
StatementTrue or false?
Nova runs steps from top to bottom.?
Nova can guess a step you forgot to write.?
Swapping two steps can change what happens.?
A computer skips steps it does not like.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEComputers follow steps exactly. That is why the order we write matters so much.
PLANT A SEED
  • ?Drop the seed in the hole
  • ?Dig a small hole
  • ?Water the soil
  • ?Cover the seed with soil
WHY THIS EXERCISEEach step gets the next one ready. A sequence is a chain like that.
Rocket writes: put on helmet, ride the bike, buckle the helmet. Which step should move earlier? Type ride or buckle.
WHY THIS EXERCISEFinding the step in the wrong place is the first job of a bug detective.
Try it
Pick a small job, like washing your hands.
Say each step out loud, in order.
Now say the steps in a silly order. What would happen?

Quick Try: Morning Steps

Put these steps in the right order. (On paper: write 1, 2, 3, 4. On screen: drag them.)

GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL
  • ?Eat breakfast
  • ?Put on backpack
  • ?Wake up
  • ?Brush teeth
WHY THIS EXERCISEA SEQUENCE is steps in a specific order. Computers run code the same way: top to bottom, one line at a time. If you put the steps in the wrong order, the program (or your morning!) doesn't work right.
