Wednesday: Build Lever Version 1

Rocket sets the marker right in the middle of the ruler.

He tapes the load cup on one end, with 6 coins inside.

An empty push cup goes on the other end.

Nova counts coins into the push cup. "One, two, three..."

Raven watches the load cup closely.

You need

  • A ruler
  • A round marker for the fulcrum
  • 2 small paper cups
  • Tape
  • A pile of coins, all the same kind
Safety first
Coins can choke little ones. Keep them away from babies.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
Keep faces away from the ruler ends. They can flip up fast.

Build and test

  1. Tape the marker to the table so it does not roll.
  2. Lay the ruler across the marker.
  3. Tape a cup to each end of the ruler.
  4. Put 6 coins in the load cup.
  5. Add coins to the push cup until the load lifts.

When do you stop adding push coins?
KEEP IT FAIR
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Why keep 6 coins in the load cup every time?

Why tape the marker?

A round marker can roll away.

If it rolls, the fulcrum moves.

Then the test would not be fair.

Tape keeps the fulcrum in one spot.
