Week 11 Β· Lift It

Friday

Test lever version 2
// A lever or pulley that lifts a small load
⏱ about 20 min

Friday: Test Lever Version 2

Raven slides the marker closer to the load cup.

The same six coins sit in the load cup.

Nova counts push coins. "One, two, three..."

Up goes the load! "Only three!" Rocket shouts.

Then the crew tries a pulley too, just for fun.

VersionWhere is the fulcrum?Push coins needed
Rocket version 1In the middle7
Rocket version 2Close to the load3

Compare honestly

Version 2 needed fewer push coins.

The load stayed the same: 6 coins.

Only the fulcrum moved.

Your counts may be different. Write what you find.

READ THE RESULTS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which version needed less effort?
How many fewer push coins did version 2 need?
IdeaTrue or false?
Moving the fulcrum toward the load made lifting easier.?
The crew changed the load to 3 coins.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEOne change shows exactly what made lifting easier.

Bonus: a spool pulley

  1. A grown-up pushes a pencil through an empty thread spool.
  2. Rest the pencil ends on two stacks of books.
  3. A grown-up pokes two holes in a cup. Tie the string through them.
  4. Loop the string over the spool.
  5. Pull down on the string. Watch the cup rise.
Safety first
Keep coins away from babies.
Keep faces away from ruler ends.
Keep book stacks low and steady.
