Build Day: Ice Saver Race

A row of ice holders lines the lab counter.

Socks, foil, napkins and cardboard boxes!

"Same tray, same spot, same start," Raven says.

Rocket rubs his hands. "Let the ice race begin!"

Nova sets her timer for ten minutes.

  1. Heat moves from warm things to cold things.
  2. An insulator slows heat down.
  3. A plain cup shows how fast ice melts with no help.
  4. Same cubes, same spot, same start.
◇ FAMILY ICE SAVER RACE
Each team builds one ice holder.
Set up one plain cup to compare.
All cubes go in at the same time.
Peek every 10 minutes and write it down.
The last cube with ice wins.
For a grown-up
Hand out the ice cubes yourself, from one tray.
Put all holders in the same spot, out of the sun.
Ask: which material do you think slowed the heat most?
Safety first
Ice is never tasted.
Wipe up drips so nobody slips.
