Monday: The Marble Run Challenge

Rocket lets a marble roll down a book. Zip! It is gone.

"Too fast to watch!" Rocket says. "Let's slow it down."

Raven writes in her notebook. "What does slow mean? Let us pick a time."

Nova blinks. "Would you like a hint? Success needs a number."

The challenge

Engineers split a problem into criteria and constraints.

Criteria (what success means)Constraints (the limits)
The marble takes 5 seconds or moreUse paper, tape and one big piece of cardboard
The marble rolls all the way by itselfNo pushing the marble after you let go
The marble ends in a cup at the bottomStart the marble at the top of the cardboard
CRITERIA OR CONSTRAINT?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The marble takes 5 seconds or more. Criteria or constraint?
Use only paper, tape and cardboard. Criteria or constraint?
DID IT SUCCEED?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The marble takes 6 seconds and lands in the cup. Success?
It takes 7 seconds, but Rocket pushed it halfway. Success?
Imagine
Will your path be straight, zigzag or curvy?
Where will the cup go?
Draw a path the marble could take.

Why criteria matter

Criteria tell you when you are done.

Without them, you could build forever.

Our run is done when the marble takes 5 seconds or more.

It must also roll by itself and land in the cup.

CHECK ALL THE CRITERIA
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The marble takes 8 seconds but misses the cup. Success?
The marble takes 3 seconds and lands in the cup. Success?
Start the marble at the top. Criteria or constraint?
RuleAllowed?
Use paper chutes and tape.?
Push the marble halfway down.?
Use one big piece of cardboard.?
Start the marble in the middle.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEEvery run follows the same limits so we can compare them.
Try it
Find a big piece of cardboard with a grown-up.
Lean it on a chair to see how it stands.
Save it for Wednesday.
Safety first
A grown-up does any cutting.
Lean the cardboard on something steady.

You defined the problem like a pro!

Tomorrow, we learn what moves the marble.
