Thursday: Why Did It Squish?

Rocket sets the ball on the box tower.

Slowly, the tower leans sideways. Down comes the ball!

"It held for four seconds," Nova says.

Rocket rubs his chin. "We can improve it."

Raven points. "What do you notice? Every side is a square."

Find the problem

The ball pushed down on the frame.

The square sides leaned over, just like Raven's square.

The tower was tall enough. It was not stiff enough.

READ THE TABLE
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Was version 1 tall enough?
Did version 1 hold the ball for ten seconds?
ONE FAIR CHANGE
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which change fixes the leaning and changes only one thing?
Engineer tip
Keep the same ball for every test.
A heavier ball would make the test unfair.
Draw your tower with triangles added.

What a load does

A load is the weight a build holds.

The ball is the load in this challenge.

The load pushes down on the frame.

A weak shape bends under the push.

LOAD DETECTIVE
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What is the load in this challenge?
Why did the square sides lean?
How long did version 1 hold the ball?
IdeaTrue or false?

Version 1 was stiff enough.?
A heavier ball would keep the test fair.?
Triangles can make the frame stiffer.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEKnowing what failed tells you what to fix.
Try it
Press gently on top of your version 1 frame.
Watch which sides lean.
Mark those sides with a bit of tape.
Safety first
Press with one finger.
Keep straw ends away from eyes.

A lean is a clue, and you followed it!

Tomorrow, we test version 2.
